Each January the Bill Hailey Memorial Short Course is presented twice–one day in Abilene and one in Arlington–for a full day of learning, professional development hours, and networking. Well-known speakers provide presentations and printed coursebooks are given to all attendees. Attendees pay a small fee for lunch and all day snacks and beverages. The event is planned and organized by the Continuing Education Committee of the Southwest Section of the AAPG, which funds it.

Earth Science Week is an opportunity for the AGS to provide information to children and schools. An exhibit during Abilene’s Art Walk night offers interesting things for families to see, touch, think about and take home, as well as teacher activity packets. Ron Shaw has headed this effort for many years.

Each May, 2-6 scholarships are awarded to college students majoring in geology and environmental sciences. Applicants must be from the Region 14 area, and must be attending one of the colleges or universities in that area, with the inclusion of Angelo State University and Wayland Baptist University.

The AGS is a partner in scholarship funding available to teachers who take online courses offered by the American Geosciences Institute. This year’s offering is “Earth and Space Science”, and participants earn 3 hours credit.
